In this article scientists have discovered fifteen new emotions that have been unknown up until now.  At first there was only six emotions that scientists could identify but with the idea that emotions can combine made allowed for more of an array of emotions. The way that this related to a class I am taking is in my psychology class, we are learning about different reactions and emotions.

I think this event could lead to us better understanding where our emotions come from and what actually causes us to feel a certain way. This event gives me a bigger outlook on what I am feeling whenever I am in a certain situation.

The article uses numbers to represent the amount of emotions were before this discovery and after this discovery. This is a way of showing statistics.

current even #6

In this article it describes the most prestigious of all military awards: the Medal of Honor.  This in the most difficult award to acquire and is usually only given to the recipient who was killed during the event that earned them the medal. Only nine of these medals were given since the vietnam war, with this one being the tenth.

The process that is involved in presenting the award is very long and goes through many stages where military officials can vote to either pass is on to the next award or just keep them at the current award. All-in-all it takes about three years for the award to actually be presented to the recipient.

I think that this article is very important, it lets us know what really is goes behind the awards that our soldiers. The way this soldier that received this award reacts toward it is really interesting also, he appreciates the award but he also feels that he did not do anything special to deserve the award.

With ivory being illegal the US destroyed over five million tons ivory in January.  The black market for ivory has remained steady over the past fifty years and the demand is still high.  With the killing of elephants illegal, people still do it and the elephant population is dwindling lower and lower.  Other countries along with the US are following through with this movement and they are also cracking down on the poachers and the black market merchants.

10 million dollars worth of Ivory was collected from 2009 until 2014. in the US alone.  In other countries where this problem is more centralized the amount is even more.  Ivory is worth about ten-thousand dollars per kilo, giving it the nickname “White Gold.”

People who follow this issue closely say that “demand is fueled by rapid growth in the world's second biggest economy,” which in this case is China (Williams).  Over the course of five years over fifteen thousand elephants were killed. This article related to my biology class I took last year because it deals with animals and their endangerment.

I think that what these countries are trying to do is great because killing these amazing animals just for their tusks is just horrible.

  • How does the author use language to advance her point of view? Use evidence from the selection to support your answer.
The author uses language to advance their point of view saying, “before feeding them into two crushing machines” which shows that the author supports the destruction of the ivory because it uses harsh language to show it.

Fish exhibit

This article is about a new exhibit in the Tennessee aquarium, hey are featuring about eight new species of fish that grow to giant sizes. The fish they are featuring are from all over the world and mos are fresh water, two of which are found in North America. The reason they have this exhibit is probably just to get more people to visit but I am sure that this worked because it seems really interesting.

I think that this article was very interesting and I also think that this article will help the aquarium gain visitors. This is the first exhibit that contains this many “freshwater megafish” and judging by the cost it just might be the last (Williams).

Blog #2

For this weeks voice I am going to write about an article I read about a fish that is native to North Africa and its eating habits. The African Tiger fish has recently been recorded leaping out of a body of water and snatching low flying birds out of the air. Out of the 14,000 species of fish out there, there is only about five that have adapted to this behavior. Most of the time that birds are eaten by fish it is usually just by chance for instance, if a bird falls into the water.

This article relates to my biology class I took last year, it is related because it shows how organisms can adapt their eating habits based on their environments. My position on this article is that I believe it is very interesting that fish are able to do this. Whenever you think of birds being eaten by fish you normally would imagine a great white attacking a bird that is floating in the water, but few would think that a freshwater fish would be able to jump out of the water and attack a bird that is in the air. This event affects me because I will think of this whenever I am at a lake or river and see a bird fly over, I will always imagine a Tiger fish jumping out and grabbing it.

-What is the central idea of the passage and how is it developed and refined throughout the selection? Use evidence from the selection to support your answer.

The central idea of the passage is about how a species of fish in Africa are able to leap out of the water and feed on flying birds. The African Tiger fish is one of only “five species are known to prey on birds” out of the 14,000 other species of freshwater fish (Smit). Over the course of the survey the scientists recorded “as many as 300 [barn swallows] were preyed upon” this proves that the barn swallows are a part of the fishes’ everyday diet (Smit).

Almasy, Steve. Fish Put on New Light. Article. CNN. 9 Jan 2014. Web. 10 Jan 2014 <http://www.cnn.com/2014/01/08/world/fish-light-up/index.html?hpt=wo_t2>

This article is about fish that absorb a type of light and use it to produce another type of light that allows them to glow a different color.  Scientists do not know what the reason for these fish to do this is, some have ideas that the fish could be using this type of biofluorescence as a way of attracting a mate or for warding off predators. Others however believe that the lights serve no use.

This article relates to my biology class I took last year. The way that the article relates is that it is talking about an organism and how these species are able to create these lights while other species are not able to. I believe this article is very interesting, and I also believe that the lumination that the fish produce have a use.

I feel that this discovery is very important, people can learn even more about the creature that live in our oceans. This affects the way that I will look at fish whenever I goto the beach now I will always wonder if there is any fish glowing under me.
